The recommendation from the NHS, suggests children aged 1 to 3 years should eat no more than 2g salt a day (equivalent to 0.8g sodium).
We understand the importance of minimising salt intake for babies and young children and work hard to ensure that our menus comply with this guidance.
At Nursery Kitchen we:
-
- Never add salt to our food during cooking. Instead, we rely on herbs, citrus and spices to add flavour
- Ensure where possible, all in-house recipes are low in salt (green label) meaning they contain no more than 0.3g salt per 100g (equivalent to no more than 0.36g per 120g portion). In a small minority of dishes this isn’t always possible due to the natural salt content of some ingredients such as cheese
- Avoid condiments such as soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce and other salty sauces. We make our own sauces and baked beans from scratch to reduce salt content
- We source tinned foods such as lentils, beans and chickpeas in water, not brine or salted water
- We don’t use processed meats or fish products such as bacon, ham, fish fingers, nuggets or sausages, which are high in salt. Instead, we use unprocessed meats, fish and a variety of other low salt suitable protein sources
- Some grocery items and finished goods such as bread, crackers, humous and cheese inherently contain salt as a preservative. Where possible we opt for brands and products which are lower in salt and encourage settings to balance these items across their menu to keep overall salt content low
