Our stance on sugar

We know that children are consuming more than 3 times the recommended amount of sugar daily and tooth decay in children is costing the NHS millions of pounds every year

As leaders in early years food provision we believe we have a responsibility to set examples of the highest standards when it comes to food and nutrition. This is one of the reason we don’t add sugar to any of our recipes including second courses.

At Nursery Kitchen we:

    • Never add sugar to our food during cooking
    • Only use plain, unsweetend yoghurts and never sweeten yoghurts or second courses with sugar, sweeteners, fruit puree or other sugar substitutes
    • Source tinned fruit in juice, not syrup
    • Do not use sugar substitutes such as maple syrup, date syrup, agave nectar or fruit purees
    • Do not use artificial sweeteners which may promote a preference for sweet-tasting foods
    • Do not offer smoothies or juices on our menu, as the sugar in these drinks is classed as ‘free*’ or ‘added’ sugar due to the manufacturing process they go through

We offer a range of ready-to-eat breakfast cereals. These are ‘low in sugar’ so less than 5.0g per 100g of total sugars and green as per traffic light food labelling. This includes Weetabix, puffed oats and puffed rice. This goes above and beyond the Eat Better Start Better guidelines, which also allows breakfast cereals labelled as medium (amber) in sugar. Where possible we choose breakfast cereals fortified with vitamins and minerals too.

*The definition of free sugars for the UK includes:

    • All added sugars including honey, syrups and nectars
    • All sugars naturally present in fruit and vegetable juices, purées and pastes and similar products in which the structure has been broken down
    • All sugars in drinks (except for lactose and galactose naturally present in milk and dairy products)
